After a long day of travel on Monday and a 45 minute ride from the airport, we arrived to our hotel in Reykjavik. We were starving and couldn’t wait to check-in and grab something to eat.
Our hotel, Apotek Hotel, is in the most popular location in Reykjavik. We dropped our bags and headed off to Saeta Svinid (which translates to The Sweet Pig). I must say I had the best burger I’ve had in months and I had to have the boot.
We were exhausted and called it an early night.
Briana’s mom Cathie had provided our family a special treat to the famous Blue Lagoon, however Briana I both thought that it was for Tuesday when in fact it was scheduled for Wednesday, today. That left us in a rough situation with trying to make last minute plans for a tour of the golden circle. So we opted to tour around Reykjavik. A lovely little town with a ton of history and some really cool shops.
Our hotel sits in a popular square where Briana and I decided to take in some drinks and have a little alone time and people watch.
We continued on touring around town with the girls and Briana’s dad Stephen.
Today began for me at 5:02am with our bed, and the building, shaking from a 4.2 magnitude earthquake. Which is normal for Iceland but not for me. Then after our breakfast, we had a stronger earthquake, this time a 4.5 magnitude. In fact they’ve had over 1,200 earthquakes since 10pm last night, which could be a precursor to a volcanic eruption. With an exciting start to the day, we headed to the Blue Lagoon.
We arrived at 9:45am for our 10am reservation. I would highly recommend checking-in online prior to your arrival or you’ll be stuck in the long ling trying to check-in. With two days here in Iceland, this was a must do. And I would highly recommend it. Our reservations included 1 clay mask and 1 drink, with just a scan of your bracelet by an attendant. Plus we had access to the steam room, sauna, and a sauna cave (which is basically a dark sauna in a cave like structure, but in the dark). So relaxing and well well worth it. Also call it a small world but Sienna ran into a fellow student from her high school while enjoying the lagoon.
After 2 hours enjoying the warm relaxing waters of the blue lagoon we made it back to our hotel where the girls collapsed in their room while Briana and I headed off to do some last minute shopping and grab the most amazing FRESH cinnamon buns I’ve ever had from a little bakery. And I will say I do love the graffiti art they have around town.
We met up with Briana’s dad for our 5pm pint/wine before dinner. I’m gonna miss this ritual.
For our final dinner Stephen had made reservations at the most amazing seafood restaurant called Messinn. WOW!
As this amazing trip comes to an end, I wanna say a very special thank to Briana’s parents Stephen and Cathie for allowing us to tag along on this most memorable vacation. Such great memories have been made and the girls have added new foods to their repertoire for sure.
Tomorrow we leave this land of fire & ice to once again be back in the rat race of the DC Metro area. We are all very excited to be reunited with our most amazing Australian Shepherd Kota but not all of the laundry.
So remember regardless of where your travels take you, why not just go?
